Your analysis of the image needs to take 3 factors into account:
- lighting and color
- composition and framing
- meaning — what does it mean? How does it mean?
Movie Posters or Album Art
VisCom Blog Assignment: Select a movie poster or piece of album cover art work. Analyze and discuss your selection in terms of the vocabulary of semiotics used in lecture and in the textbook. Comments are required
Just a reminder that your written comments — posted to your classmates’ blogs — are an important part of this class. You need to spend at least 50 minutes per week writing and responding to comments. Make sure that you “approve” the comments so that they appear on your blog.
Change the frame, change the meaning
Drawing upon the lectures, textbook and discussions, please select one news photograph from a current event. Using the vocabulary that we’ve been learning, describe the photograph and explain how the choices concerning composition, framing and use of color affect the meaning of the picture. Assignment for January 31
How do painters and photographers use
light? For this assignment, please select a single image from the choices below. Begin your blog post by clearly identifying the image that you selected (or link to the image). Describe the image, and take a moment to consider your personal reaction to it. How does it make you feel? What do you think about when you look at it? Next, and this is the central question for this assignment, write a brief (250 words) analysis of the use the light in the image. For example, what are the principle sources of light? Where is the key light coming from? Can you identify use of side light and back light? Conclude your essay with a summary of the role of light in the image that you selected.
